What each one costs to put in
Gas inserts usually land in the middle on install cost, and the number moves depending on whether a gas line already runs to the room. If it does, you’re mostly paying for the unit and the venting. If it doesn’t, running the line is the line item that surprises people.
Wood stoves and inserts are often the cheapest unit to buy and the most involved to install correctly, because the chimney system has to be right. Pellet units sit close to gas on price and need an electrical outlet plus a short vent run.

How much work each one is
Gas wins on effort and it isn’t close. You press a button, you get heat, and the only real chore is the yearly service visit. If you want fire without a routine, that’s your answer.
Wood asks the most. You’re sourcing and stacking dry fuel, building the fire, and cleaning ash. Plenty of people love that part, and if you do, wood pays you back with heat that doesn’t stop when the power does.
Pellet sits in between. You’re hauling forty pound bags and emptying an ash pan, but the burn itself is automatic once the hopper’s full. Worth knowing: a pellet unit needs electricity, so it goes quiet in an outage unless you’ve got a battery backup.
One thing people skip. Whichever fuel you land on, budget for the yearly service. Gas needs its valve and pilot checked, wood and pellet need the flue cleared. It's the cheapest appointment you'll book all year, and it keeps most manufacturer warranties valid.
Burn bans and what they mean here
The Puget Sound Clean Air Agency calls burn bans on poor air quality days through the winter, and those bans do reach Snohomish County. A stage one ban stops uncertified wood burning. A stage two ban stops nearly all wood and pellet burning unless it’s your only source of heat.
Gas is exempt from both stages, which matters more than most buyers expect. If your fireplace is your main heat, ask us about the sole source exemption before you choose, because the paperwork’s easier to sort out before the install than after.
Matching the fuel to the house you have
An older Arlington or Snohomish home with a masonry chimney in decent shape is a natural fit for a wood insert, since the structure’s already there. Newer builds without a chimney usually point toward gas or pellet, because both vent through a wall with a much smaller run.
Room size matters too. A unit that’s too big for the space will drive you out of the room and short cycle, and one that’s undersized never quite gets there. That sizing call is the part we’d rather make in person than over the phone.
