What the visit covers

What does a chimney sweep include in Arlington?

Protected. Drop cloths down and a vacuum running, so the room looks the way it did before.

Swept. The chimney brushed from the firebox to the top, including the space just above the fireplace opening where buildup collects.

Stoves and inserts. The pipe or liner connection swept, and the door seal and glass checked.

Firebox. Ash and debris cleared; brick and joints checked for cracks, gaps, or loose pieces.

Damper. The metal flap above the fire checked that it opens, closes, and seals.

Top. Cap and screen checked for damage and nests; the top of the chimney looked over for cracks.

Liner. Checked for visible cracks or gaps, as far as can be seen from the top and bottom.

Surroundings. A check that nothing near the fireplace is too close to the heat.

How much does a chimney sweep cost in Arlington?

Single-story home

The price covers the sweep, the checks above, and the report. Repairs, parts, and a new cap or screen are extra and quoted before any work starts.

If something needs fixing

Good to know

How it works

  • Book a visit. Call, text, or use the form. Tell us fireplace, stove, or insert, and whether the house is one story or two.
  • Your technician comes out. Sweeps, cleans, services, inspects, and walks you through what they found.
  • Light it. And don’t think about it again until next fall.

When to book

Early season. If you burn through the winter, book once a year, ideally summer or fall before the busy season and with enough time to make any necessary repairs.

Burning every day? Ask your technician whether a mid-season visit makes sense for how you burn.

Didn’t use it last year? You may not need a sweep. If you want to know where it stands before you start again, the inspection is the better fit.

What is creosote and when does it become dangerous?

Creosote is what wood smoke leaves behind as it cools on its way up the chimney. The Chimney Safety Institute of America sorts it into three degrees, and the degree your technician finds decides how much work it takes to clear. Dry wood and hotter, shorter fires keep most chimneys at the first.

Stage

What it looks like

What it takes to remove

Stage 1

Loose, flaky soot that brushes off easily

A standard chimney brush. This is the kind you want your technician to find.

Stage 2

Shiny black flakes with hardened tar in them

Heavy brushes and/or rotary tools to break it loose

Stage 3

Hard, glossy coating, like tar

Chemical treatment for masonry/brick chimneys. New liner for prefab.

FAQ

Common questions

How long does a chimney sweep take?

Most wood service and chimney sweeps take under one hour from the moment we set up to when you’re ready for the cold season. Heavy Stage 2 buildup takes longer.

No. We put drop cloths down, seal the opening, and run a vacuum through the whole job. Sweeping is a dusty process inside the flue and it should stay inside the flue. If your living room looks different when we leave, we did it wrong.

No. Sweeping is for wood. Gas doesn’t require any sweeping in the vents. A pellet vent’s small amount of fine ash is emptied through the tee cap as part of the pellet service.

You hear about it that day, in writing, with a price. We do not start unplanned work while we are up there and add it to the invoice.
